Gynecomastia is the condition of abnormal enlargement of mammary glands in males leading to enlargement of breasts. It can occur in all stages of life from: infancy, puberty, and in middle-aged to elder men. It is different from from Pseudogynecomastia which occurs in overweight or obese male due to excessive fat tissues on the breast.
The possible causes of Gynecomastia in men are:
1.Weight Gain: When a person puts on excessive weight , fat gets deposited around the chest area causing the chest to look like a female breasts. Depending on your genetics man boobs can temporarily appear when men start losing weight because the fat stored in the chest the is last place to be remove - however persisting with ones weight loss program will eventually get this resolve.
2.Development:
a.In infants- Most male infants have enlarged breasts at the time of birth due to the effect of their mother's estrogens. But this situation persists only for few weeks after birth and goes away slowly.
b. During puberty- At the time of puberty the condition of Gynecomastia occurs due to the imbalance of hormones. The condition generally resolves over an approximately three year time period, but if it persists for more than three years, then it may be a case of long term Gynecomastia.
c. Older men- as we get older (near about 50 years), the production of testosterone (male sex hormone) decreases and can sometimes cause the chest to lose its shapely male form and start to look more like female. Approximately 25% of males over 50 years are affected by this form of man boobs.
3. Hormonal imbalance: the sex hormones like testosterones and estrogens are responsible for the sex characters of us humans. The testosterones are responsible for male sex characters while the estrogens are responsible for female sex characters but both are present in male and females (in varying quantities and according to the sex). When the amount of estrogens in males increases, the breast tissue enlargement and other minor female characters can evolve in some males.
4. Certain medications: In some instances certain medications can also be responsible for crating Gynecomastia which are as follows:
a. Cardiac medications- The medicines used for the treatment of heart diseases. E.g. Lanoxin and calcium channel blockers.
b. Anti-androgens medications- These medicine are used for curing the diseases like prostate cancer or prostrate enlargement etc. e.g. Aldactone, Flutamide and Proscar.

f. Antibiotics- The antibiotic drugs used for the killing of pathogenic microbes in the body
cn also cause Gynecomastia.
5. Health problems: The following health problems can lead to Gynecomastia due to the imbalance of hormones in these conditions:
a. Hyperthyroidism- Too much thyroxin will also lead to Gynecomastia.
b .Liver failure- The liver problems which occur due to hormonal imbalance and the medications used for it, have been thought to have an influence in causing Gynecomastia.
